Assistant Professor of Ophthalmology, Director of Glaucoma Service and Glaucoma Fellowship

Shivani S. Kamat is an Assistant Professor of Ophthalmology, Director of the Glaucoma Service, and a
glaucoma and anterior segment surgeon at the University of Texas Southwestern Medical Center in
Dallas, TX. Dr. Kamat completed her ophthalmology residency at Loyola University in Maywood, IL, and
subsequent glaucoma fellowship at Massachusetts Eye and Ear Infirmary in Boston, MA, before joining
the University of Michigan Kellogg Eye Center in Ann Arbor. There, she held an academic appointment
as an Assistant Professor and served as the Glaucoma Fellowship Director as well as the Medical
Director of the Kellogg Eye Center in Brighton, MI. She moved to Dallas in 2020 and was in private
practice for a year before assuming her position at UT Southwestern.
Dr. Kamat has a rich background in the management of complex glaucoma and anterior segment
disease. She has expertise in minimally invasive glaucoma surgery and has been involved in major
clinical trials to advance the field. Her research interests include narrow angles, angle closure, and
plateau iris syndrome and associated ocular complications, epidemiology of glaucoma, and MIGS
surgical techniques. She has been an author on multiple peer-reviewed publications and book chapters
and has presented at multiple national meetings.
Teaching and mentoring feature prominently in Dr. Kamat’s career. She trained several glaucoma
fellows at Kellogg Eye Center and is the director of the glaucoma fellowship program at UT
Southwestern.
Dr. Kamat is active within multiple professional organizations and societies, including as a founder and
co-chair of Women in Glaucoma, on committees for the American Glaucoma Society and American
Academy of Ophthalmology, and as an examiner for the American Board of Ophthalmology.
